Course Description
Śrīvidyā is a Hindu Tantric Goddess tradition centered on the worship of the goddess Tripurasundarī, also known as the Beauty of the Three Cities. Tripurā, who is also referred to as Rājarājeśvarī (the Ruler of Kings) and Lalitā (the Playful One), is understood as the supreme deity—the power without which even Śiva cannot act.
In this course, we will examine the tantras, scriptural texts presented in the form of a dialogue, that contributed to the emergence of Śrīvidyā, including texts focused on the worship of Nityā goddesses and Kāmadeva (the god of love). Through the instructor’s translations of original Sanskrit texts, we will explore how the tradition has evolved over time, both in terms of its ritual practices and philosophical development.
We conclude by examining the global spread of tantric and popular worship of Tripurasundarī/Lalitā and exploring what has made this tradition so enduring and influential for over a millennium. During the course, students are introduced to the process of reading original sources as historians of religion, while also gaining a deeper understanding of the vibrant ritual and devotional worship of this goddess.
